1A ‘late talker’ is a toddler between18 to 30 months of age with a limited spoken vocabulary expected for a child of his/her age. Late talkers are typically developing well in other areas such as understanding skills, play skills, motor skills and social skills.
2Some risk factors include:
- Little babbling
- Limited number of consonant sounds (e.g. p, b, m, t, d, n, y, k, g, etc.)
- No pointing
- Uses few gestures to communicate
- Does not copy words
- Uses mostly nouns (names of people, places, things), and few verbs (action words)
- Prefers playing alone rather than with peers (social skills)
- A mild comprehension (understanding) delay for his or her age
- Little functional play or linking pretend actions together while playing
- A history of ear infections
Some late talkers do learn to speak normally on their own without any speech therapy or interventions at all. However, there is no way to tell for sure if your child will be one of those or not.
2Studies have shown that children who receive early intervention do catch up with their peers and brain plasticity is maximal from birth to 7 years. So, the earlier that therapy is started, the better.
- EIGHT interesting and interactive parent-group sessions. Conducted in a small, personalized group setting, parents learn practical strategies to help their children learn language naturally throughout their day together.
- Three individual video-based consultations that includes a video recording of you and your child interacting together. You will have the opportunity to review videos, talk about the communication goals for your child and specific strategies to use.
- You will receive over 19 hours of direct consultation hours (valued at $4,370) as well as invaluable skills that will be beneficial throughout your child’s communication journey.
- Suitability: The program is suitable for children from birth to five years of age.
- Date: TBA.
- Duration: 2 hours a week for 8 weeks.
- Recognizing your child’s stage and style of communication so that you know which steps to take next.
- Identifying what motivates your child to interact with you so you’ll know how to get conversations started.
- Adjusting everyday routines to help your child take turns and keep interactions going.
- Following your child’s lead to build her/his confidence and encourage her/him to communicate.
- Helping your child learn to communicate effectively during the everyday interactions he has with the people he loves.
- Using the strategies when you play and read books with your child to help them interact and learn language.
- Parents of young children (birth to 5 years old) suspected of having delayed language development.
- New parents who benefit from guidance on creating a positive language learning environment at home.
- Guest speakers are occasionally invited such as an Occupational Therapist, Psychologist, Paediatric physiotherapist and a Music therapist.
- WhatsApp group for parents to stay in touch and support each other. Our mums love it!
